Gender Justice seeks a world where everyone (men, women, boys and girls) is valued equally, and able to share equitably in the distribution of power, knowledge and resources. It is on this basis that the Side by Side movement, a growing global movement of people of faith who want to see gender justice become a reality across the world was established.
Recognising the influence of faith and traditional leaders on social norms and behaviours of individuals and societies, the Side by Side movement is a platform for faith and traditional leaders to build a movement to champion the rights of women and girls, men and boys for the attainment of gender justice. Through this movement, they will work together to pursue transformational change for gender justice by addressing the inequality and powerlessness faced by women and girls who suffer systematic disadvantage and discrimination – particularly those who are poor, live in rural areas, and are from particular social groups.
Being a global movement, it has been functioning in many parts of the world, including Africa, and in May 2018, the West Africa Chapter was flagged off in Ghana to pave way for the launch of national chapters in the West African sub-region.
The first meeting in Nigeria, a consultative meeting scheduled to hold in Abuja on Thursday August 30, 2018 to discuss the reality of gender justice in Nigeria will bring together prominent faith and traditional leaders from across the country.
The meeting, organized by the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD) is support by Christian Aid as part of activities in preparation of the formal launch this global movement in Nigeria. The consultative meeting will synchronise the activities of faith and traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, development partners and individuals of all orientations to advocate and address all manifestations of gender inequality in a coordinated and comprehensive way to achieve gender justice in Nigeria.
