Open Letter: NOPRIN Writes IGP On Arrest Of Nigerian Activist And Wife

Activist Samuelson Iwuoha

The Inspector General of Police
The Nigeria Police
Force headquarters,
Abuja
June 5, 2014

Dear sir,

NOPRIN CALLS FOR THE IGP'S INTERVENTION AND FOR A PROMPT, IMPARTIAL AND EXHAUSTIVE INVESTIGATION OF THE ARREST AND DETENTION OF MR. SAMUELSON IWUOHA AND HIS WIFE AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE INCIDENTS PRECEEDING THEIR ARREST.

NOPRIN has received disturbing information that the Imo State Police Command on June 3, 2014 arrested Mr. Samuelson Iwuoha and his wife from their Ikenegbu Layout, Owerri residence and have since then detained them on a 'spurious' murder allegation.

We are informed that 'Iwuoha survived an assassination attempt at his Ikenegbu Layout residence in Owerri after gunmen came looking for him in his home and left after killing one'. We are further informed that 'the police that were called in for investigation started indiscriminate arrest of youths in the neighbourhood and detained them illegally'.  Mr. Iwuoha and his wife have been in detention since the 3rd of June 2014.

Mr. Iwuoha is former aide to incumbent Imo State House of Assembly Speaker, Mr. Uwajumogu. He resigned about a year ago over serious differences  with his former boss and other fellow aides. He  has, since his resignation, continued to expose serious allegations of corrupt practices in the office of  the speaker and written petitions revealing alarming details of corruption allegedly perpetrated by both the speaker and his aides. He has also consistently called on anti corruption and other security agencies to probe the speaker and his aides.

The scheme, we are informed, is to keep Mr. Iwuoha out of circulation and make it impossible for him to continue to 'talk'. According to our information, 'On the 3rd of June 2014... hired killers came to his house leaving one person dead. With the survival of the Activist the PLAN B now is to charge him to court with all kinds of trump up allegations and jail him.'

Mr. Iwuoha has also on many occasions raised alarm  alleging threats to his life and the lives of members of his family by the speaker, his sister and aides. These threats, he claim are directly related to his exposing large scale corruption by the speaker and his aides  and his unrelenting calls for their probe.

'He had raised alarm that the politician and his sister threatened to assassinate him'.

NOPRIN calls on the Inspector General of Police to ensure a prompt, impartial and exhaustive investigation of this seemingly politically-motivated arrest and detention of Mr. Iwuoha and his wife. The identities of the murdered person and  the  gunmen who stormed Mr. Iwuoha's residence allegedly to assassinate him should be unravelled.

NOPRIN also requests the IGP to guarantee the physical safety and psychological integrity of the detained couple, their children and other family members.

National Coordinator
