News Release: The Nigeria National Tragedy Of 15th March 2014

Deaths From The Nigeria Immigration service Recruitment Stampede

The Centre for Rights and Grassroots Initiative (CRGI) is saddened and condemns in strong terms the crude, callous, barbaric, illegal, irresponsible, criminal and irresponsible assault on the dignity of human persons and life of Nigerian youths at the recruitment interview venues of the Nigeria Immigration services which resulted in the trauma, physical humiliation, bodily harm, untimely and avoidable death of Nigerians across the country on Saturday 15th March 2014. We regard this crude assault on the fundamental rights of Nigerians as a national tragedy.

The criminal and unconstitutional assault on the dignity of the job seekers who were subjected to harrowing experience, bodily injuries and termination of the lives of some is a violation of their fundamental human right as enshrined in the Nigerian constitution which should be laid squarely at the door step of the Federal government of Nigeria since the Federal Ministry of internal affairs which is the supervising ministry and ought to know better violated constitutional provisions of the respect for human life as well as the International Labour Organizations (ILO) conventions on dignity of persons.

The time has come for all Nigerians now to come out and not only condemn, but call for the prosecution of those involved in these unholy and criminal actions of the state, individuals and organizations in taking advantage of the traumatizing economic situation of the country to fleece innocent job seekers and assaulting their right to human dignity and life under the guise of providing phantom jobs to the mass of unemployed youths.

That the ministry of internal affairs and the Nigeria Immigration Services are criminally liable for this violation of the constitution is not in doubt when one takes into cognizance the fact that in this age and time, an agency of the Federal government of Nigeria can be so callous, irresponsible and irresponsive to insult our sensibilities by mobilizing millions of youths to stadia across the country all in the name of conducting a written interview in an environment that is not fit and proper for such an exercise speaks volume of the criminal intent of the organizers.

We are hereby calling on the Nigeria Police to immediately commence investigation into this violation of the right to life of Nigerians which they are constitutionally empowered to protect and ensure prosecution.

We are also calling on the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to investigate this violation of human rights and recommend appropriate sanctions to serve as a deterrent to others.

We are equally calling for the immediate resignation from office of the Minister for Internal Affairs as well as the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration services for this national tragedy.

We as well want to call on the injured victims and families of the dead to immediately approach the courts for justice in this case of clear constitutional violations by the Federal government.

We also want to use this medium to call on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to join in this struggle to ensure that justice is done to the memory of the dead, injured and Nigerians whose sensibilities have been assaulted by this matter.

Nelson Ekujumi,
Executive Director.
