News Release: Pre-High Level Consultative Workshop On Eradicating Hunger In Africa

The African Union in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Instituto Lula and the New Economic Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) have agreed to convene a High-Level Meeting for Africa that will serve as a high level advocacy event to support Africa’s initiatives and programmes to eliminate hunger.

The High Level meeting has the following objectives:

1. Renew the resolve and commitment on a common set of principles and concrete actions to ensure NEPAD overall, and Comprehensive African Agricultural Programme (CAADP) specifically, plays the role to coordinate and unify the different ongoing initiatives aimed at eradicating hunger in Africa.

2. Agree and commit to a set of principles, policies and strategies with a focus on a Zero Hunger strategy by facilitating support to integrate purpose-specific strategies and actions on comprehensive food-security and social development into the national and regional CAADP Agriculture and Food Security Investment Plans.

3. Support African countries, their governments and organized civil society to incorporate successful experiences from Brazil and other countries.

Meeting between the FAO Director General, Mr. Graziano, the Former President of Brazil, Mr. Lula and the AUC Chairperson, Dr. Zuma, held in Addis Ababa on 21 November 2012, set the official starting of the Partnership between FAO, Instituto Lula (IL) and African Union in accelerating the fight against hunger and malnutrition in Africa.

The three Parties agreed that the HLM will be organized by a Joint Task Force composed by FAO, IL, AU/DREA, NEPAD/NPCA, Government of Ethiopia and the Office of the AUC Chairperson.

At the 2012 FAO Regional Conference for Africa, the Ministers of Agriculture and Heads of Delegation of the Member States, together with Civil Society Organizations, reaffirmed their commitment to the fight against hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition.

To this effect, Instituto Lula, AU and FAO have organized a Pre-High Level Consultative workshop from 7 to 9 May 2013 at the Africa Union Head Quarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia with the objective of:

• Adopt a common agenda of concrete activities to coordinate and unify the different ongoing initiatives aimed at overcoming the plight of African populations suffering from hunger.
• As part of the Zero Hunger Challenge, support the creation and implementation of comprehensive food-security and social-development plans at national, sub-regional and regional scopes, jointly with the African Union, African economic communities and other African players.
• Help African countries, their governments and organized civil society to incorporate successful experiences from Brazil and other countries.

Among others, this Pre-High level meeting will be attended by African Ministers of Agriculture and Rural Development, UN Representatives, AU Chairperson, and governments of Ethiopia, Brazil, China and Vietnam.
