Poem: The Centenary Of The Elephant’s Journey

Humping bags
Assorted,
Back laced with lumbago,
The elephant
Named naij by the lady
Of Lugard's loins
Grunting
Lumber
To the outstretched
Arms of century.

Bungled hopes,
Bloodbaths,
Banalities,
Hunger,
Anger
And now
Another bloodletting
Litter the route
Of the elephant's journey.

The big beast
Booed
By Lugard's bouncers
Trudge on
Trumpeting.

Centurions,
Minions of centurions
Ready the red rugs
And the trumpets
To trumpet the centenary
Of the elephant's journey.
