News Release: Right Livelihood Award Laureate Passes Away At Age Of 100

Late Sankaralingam Jagannathan

The Right Livelihood Award Foundation mourns the death of Ghandian activist Mr. Sankaralingam Jagannathan. Mr. Jagannathan worked on the behalf of the landless poor all his life and received the Right Livelihood Award together with his wife Krishnammal in 2008.

Sankaralingam Jagannathan passed away at Ghandigram, Tamil Nadu in Southern India, on Tuesday, February 12th, around 12.30. He died at the age of 100. The Right Livelihood Award Foundation was informed about his death by his wife Krishnammal Jagannathan

The Jagannathans have worked tirelessly to redistribute land to the landless and are the founders of the organization LAFTI - Land for the Tillers' Freedom. The Right Livelihood Award Jury honoured them in 2008 "...for two long lifetimes of work dedicated to realising in practice the Gandhian vision of social justice and sustainable human development, for which they have been referred to as 'India's soul'."

The Right Livelihood Award Foundation's thoughts and prayers are with Krishnammal Jagannathan and their family at this difficult time. We are sure that Mr. Jagannathan’s vision and work will continue and be taken forward by the countless individuals he has inspired.
