U-Report: CD Urges South-East Governors To Conduct LG Elections

Election In Nigeria

Report By: Campaign For Democracy South-East Region Publicity Arm

The Campaign for Democracy (CD) South-East Region has urged the South-East governors to conduct local government election in their respective states, which would bring governance closer to the grassroots.

This was contained in a statement issued to newsmen by CD in Onitsha, Anambra on Monday.

The statement was signed by Dede Uzor A. Uzor and Dr. Jerry Chukwuokolo, chairman and secretary of the group.

``It is very sad that up till now some South-East governors had not deemed it fit to democratize and conduct local council elections to bring governance close to the people.

``The worst of the states within the region is Anambra State that had not conducted local council polls for over nine years out of 14 years unabridged democratic rule in the country.

``In Abia State, Abia governor had been playing hide and seek politics with the conduct of local government election.

``While his alleged excuse of the state not having sufficient funds to conduct the election is not only evil but wicked and condemnable.

``In Ebonyi, Gov. Martin Elechi had not shown commitment to see that the LG election is conducted. Ebonyi governor is playing politics of I-know-it-all.

``In Imo State, Gov. Rochas Okorocha has tentatively scheduled the election to hold in April this year. And he is currently working on how to achieve the set target of the election.

``However, we are urging Gov. Okorocha to resolve the issue of the immediate past chairmen and councilors by paying all outstanding salaries and entitlement before the proposed election in April in order to enable some of them who want to participate in the fresh election to do so,’’ it said.

CD also commended Gov. Sullivan Chime of Enugu to be the only governor in the South-East to believe in democracy and had conducted local council election.

``As a true democrat, Gov. Chime had exhibited high sense of maturity and love for democracy to take its roots at the grassroots as well as empowering the rural people,’’ it said.

The statement further said that it was given the remaining South-East governors yet to conduct council election six months ultimatum; adding: ``Failing to abide with the six months timeline, we would mobilize the local youths in the affected states to stage a continuous demonstration until the election is conducted’’.
